I mean, what are they doing on a veloster turbo. I feel like ive only seen pinstripes as an american dealership addon. Are these common elsewhere?

whats any thing that is not a better transmission doing on a veloster turbo? Seriously, that's the only thing those need added, not fucking pinstripes!

Painted pinstripes on hotrods, Rollers, or lowriders? Awesome.
Taped stripes applied by dealerships to make the car look "fancy?"
Utterly wack.
I peeled them off the two cars I've owned that had them, the second I signed the papers.

They work okay on very square cars, like my Volvo 740, but on modern cars? Nope.

Yes. In the 1980s.

Pinstripes are a lot like whitewall tires and vinyl roofs - there is a very small number of cars on which they look totally appropriate, and a much larger number on which they look horrible. The vast majority of modern cars fall into the later category.
They are very popular with American dealerships, because they are able to market it to gullible customers as an "extra" and build it into the adjusted sticker price. Most dealers will simply apply them to the car as soon as its off the truck, without them ever being requested by customers.

I have them on my NA Miata, and I think they bring a well-placed emphasis on the beltline/shoulderline. The sides of the car are so rounded and essentially featureless that it works. The kinds of kinks and creases in the sheetmetal that are so common now would only compete with pinstripes, so I completely agree that they don't belong on many new cars these days.

There was gold ones on my Cobra when I got it. I pulled it off the instant I got home. I wonder of the original owner ordered it with that since it had stupid gold emblems too.

I once worked for a company that added black pinstripes (and a door sticker) to every truck, all of them white. They looked good for 1989. Never paid much attention to it until one day I was at the shop and there was a guy there painting stripes on a new truck — amazing to watch. I am sure it is a dying art, but it was really neat to see it done. He used two brushes of different sizes to get the wide/thin stripe, and he did them at the same time in one hand (held them sort of like chopsticks).

I quite like the pinstripes on my 84 Cutlass. But I agree, pinstripes and newer cars don't mix.

I'm not usually a pin stripe guy, but I've seen Jags like mine without them and just can't wrap my head around it. Some cars, like mine, wear them well. Others, not so much.

This Jag looks great, but I'll take the stance that pinstripes look great on nearly all cars.

I usually like them. I just bought an 03 Civic coupe and it has a black pinstripe, and it's definitely growing on me. They make the car look longer, which is nice for a car like the Civic.

I've got a silver Saturn Ion with a red pinstripe. It really adds to the Saturn-ness of the car and it works for my eye.

I love me some nice, hand-painted pinstripes on certain cars. Pinstripe tape is always lame. Even just a single line hand-painted down the side of a car is a work of art. But it certainly doesn't work with every car.
